10 - Oh, So That’s A Hot Flash. Yay.

“How can this be menopause?” I asked. “I’m not old enough!”

“Well, you are at what is typically called ‘midlife’,” Dr. Barton said.

Peggy went back out, and he pulled open his laptop. “Look here,” he said. “Headaches are one of the symptoms. When was your last period?”

“I don’t know,” I said. “I have an IUD, so after the first year, I pretty much haven’t have one.”

“All right. If you’re in menopause, we’ll need to take that out, and then we can go from there.”

“Couldn’t it be anything else? Like a tumor? Or dehydration? Something?”

“Well, we’re going to look at that, too. But I want you to keep this in mind. You are going to drink more water, if you’re having headaches. If you’re dehydrated, or lacking in iron, or anything else, we’ll find it. I’ll have the lab do a whole panel, and see if anything is off balance.”

“Why did you have to go right to menopause?” I asked. Of all the things I suspected, this wasn’t even on the list.

“Because it happens to all women,” Dr. Barton said. “And we need to rule out as many of the normal things as possible.”

“What if it is menopause?” I asked. “Will you still look at other things?”

“I always do,” he said. “That’s my job. Body detective. How are you doing otherwise? Sleeping all right? Getting sweaty at night at all?”

“Not that I noticed,” I said.

“Lightheaded? Any balance issues?”

“Well, no, not that I can think of,” I said. I didn’t think getting swoony over Gerard was a permanent issue.

“Let’s do a complete physical, and I’ll have Peggy take enough blood to make a vampire happy, and we’ll test you for everything, even tumors,” he said with a grin.

“Are you making fun of me?”

“Not really, but a little. Whatever it is, even if it’s menopause, knowing will help us to help you feel better. Now, let’s get started.”

One physical and true to his word, lots of drawn blood later, I left the office with a list of things I needed to be doing, and orders to pay attention to what I was eating and drinking when I got headaches. I didn’t want it to be menopause, because that felt… old. But I felt better.

And for all my complaints, I was pretty sure it wasn’t a tumor.

When I got back to the shop, and pulled my car into the garage, I walked through the shop to admire the new shelves and just look around. It made me happy.

Until someone banged on the windows.

“Hey!” I shouted. “Knock it off! We’re not open yet!”

The man—because it was a man—banged on the window again with his fist.

Now I was pissed. First, it was bad manners. Second, my windows were old. Original to the building, or pretty damn close. If he broke it, I’d have a hell of a time repairing it. Plus, I’d have to deal with the city, since we were a registered building on the national historic register.

I didn’t want to deal with the city.
